American voters have decided to send Donald Trump back to the White House for another four years and his return to the Oval Office is historic.
Trump’s re-election marks only the second time in U.S. history that a president has won two non-consecutive terms. Grover Cleveland is the only other president to have earned that distinction.
Trump’s impact will be felt far and wide, across industries and across the globe. A renewed Trump administration will also be felt deeply within the travel industry.
Reached this morning by TravelPulse, one day after Americans went to the polls, here’s a round-up of what travel industry insiders nationally and globally have to say about Trump’s second term in office and how it is likely to impact the travel industry.
Some comments have been edited for clarity or length, but are otherwise direct quotes from all participants.
U.S. Travel Association President and CEO Geoff Freeman
"We congratulate President-Elect Trump and look forward to working with the incoming administration to make the United States the world’s top travel destination and improve the travel experience for millions of Americans who take to the roads, rails and sky every day.
As we embark on a mega-decade of sports – including the World Cup and Summer and Winter Olympics – a tremendous opportunity is ahead to maximize the competitive strength of the United States as a travel destination. We stand ready to work with the new administration to realize America’s full potential."
Monday Cleghorn, Owner, Such a Time as This Travel
"First and foremost, during President Trump’s time in office, my agency, Such a Time as This Travel, was at its peak. We were well over 10 million in sales annually, however we’ve seen something very different for the last four years. Our sales have been at their lowest in 15 years, with 2024 being our most difficult year to date.
We experienced so many cancellations, postponing travel to 2025 or even 2026, and less bookings, simply because people were very concerned about the economy. I believe that most of America was concerned as to how the election would go, regardless of which party they supported.
But the common concern for our clients was whether we would see 4 more years of a weak economy or would we see 4 years of a strong economy?
I personally believe that Trump knows how to run a business, and the country needs to be run as such. With him back in office, most of our clients have hope in our future and I believe they will feel much more comfortable splurging on things that bring joy. We all know that travel brings joy.
I believe that for us, our clients will let go of the fears of what their financial futures will look like and will be much more comfortable planning for future experiences that gratify and delight the soul. And I believe that travel does both! I look forward to seeing our revenue increase substantially over the next few months."
Debra Brown, CEO, SmartBird World Travel
"There are so many internal and external forces inside and outside of governmental control that impact travel from access, travel restrictions, increase or decrease in discretionary income, global conflicts, shifting weather patterns, pandemics, industry labor strikes and fuel costs ... It's too early to say how President-Elect Trump will respond to - or spark any of these issues."
Sonya Little, Sandcastle Wishes Travel
"I feel most [people] were hesitant to spend money based on the state of the economy at the moment however, I’m hopeful that will quickly change based on the results.
I pray once the dust settles for everyone, they will be excited and start booking again. Hopefully, the economy will bounce back, and people will have money for the extras, such as vacations."
Vincie Ho, Founder and Executive Director, RISE Travel Institute
"The
potential impact of Trump’s leadership on the tourism sector is
concerning, particularly regarding diversity, equity, inclusion, and
accessibility.
His anti-immigration policies could lead to stricter visa
regulations and travel bans, deterring tourists and restricting the
mobility of migrants who strengthen the workforce. His administration
may negatively impact the visibility of LGBTQ+-led tourism businesses
and support that LGBTQ+ travelers need, creating an unwelcoming
environment that discourages tourism and harms communities reliant on
diverse visitors.
Indigenous tourism could suffer as prioritizing
resource extraction over land rights and environmental protection may
encroach on sacred lands, disrupting cultural heritage and traditional
practices vital for authentic experiences. Policies could further hinder
decarbonization efforts in the tourism industry by favoring fossil fuel
development and reducing regulatory oversight, limiting the industry's
ability to transition to sustainable practices.
Pertaining
to RISE Travel Institute, under a Trump administration, discussions on
social justice and DEI could be restricted in higher education across
more states, significantly limiting our capacity to engage tourism
students and faculty in critical and decolonial thinking, undermining
our mission to foster a more just and equitable world through travel
education.
RISE
Travel Institute cares deeply about those who may feel unsafe or hurt
the most over the next four years—women, queer individuals, Black and
Latinx communities, Indigenous peoples, new immigrants, those facing
healthcare challenges, and innocent women and children in Gaza and the
Middle East.
We
must find ways to support each other and protect the vulnerable among
us. This isn’t just about tourism; it’s about our family, friends,
colleagues, and communities at risk. Let's prepare for the unjust
systems that lie ahead. We have significant work ahead of us."
Zach Lazzari, Owner, Cross Border Coverage
"I drove the Pan American Highway during Trump's first presidency and had major concerns before crossing the border.
This was immediately after his infamous "They are sending rapists and murders" quote. Ultimately, I found that he was rarely in the conversation and had no impact on my travels.
Your everyday person around the world is generally indifferent to politics in their day to day lives. They are focused on more important things, like making a living and having positive interactions with the people around them. This seems to be a universal truth in my experience.
This time around, it will be interesting but I don't believe his presidency will not have immediate impacts on travel. Exchange rates are the biggest driver when it comes to travel.
If he executes on campaign promises, we can see a major rise in the national debt and declining international trust in the value of the dollar. That can certainly have major implications, making the dollar less resilient while increasing the cost of international travel. If this happens, we can see a bump in domestic travel spending and a decline in international trips.
My business is focused on travel in Mexico, so it's in the hot seat of potential policy changes. I don't see legal border crossings and tourism being negatively impacted, however.
It's the busiest border in the world and the dollar value of commerce is massive. Destinations like Cabo and Cancun are more popular than ever and we are seeing a huge increase in Americans moving to Mexico as well. His policy proposals are potentially more volatile than other candidates, but I don't see them hitting tourism hard."
JoAnne Weeks, Director, Vacations, Acendas Travel
"Trump has said himself that 'tariff' is his favorite word. His tariffs could put us into a global economic instability. This could include the European Union and Mexico, to which so many of our consumers flood to annually.
He plans to reimplement the travel ban for a majority of Muslim countries.
I'm concerned about what message this will this send to the rest of world - the world we in our industry cherish and welcome our differences, the industry we base our livelihood on.
Will President Trump's message cause our travelers to pause from fear, or will it give them a feeling of calm allowing them to explore the world in a more confident manner? Time will only tell."
Jake Haupert, Co-Founder, The Transformational Travel Council
"However one feels about the outcome, the next four years will surely be one of transformation, which inevitably comes with heightened emotions and opinions within the US and abroad.
I forecast that inbound tourism from key source markets overseas will suffer, which will impact our local economies, specifically the small tour operators independent hotels.
On the flip side, US outbound will likely grow as many people will desire to travel more often, stay longer, and maybe even go further afar. However it shakes out, given divisions and tensions, the tourism industry has a wonderful opportunity to become significantly more conscious, healing and impactful.
This means travel has to evolve its principles and practice to foster more connection, meaning, and purpose for travelers and the people and places they visit. It is clearly time for travel to unleash its super powers in breaking down walls within and between us."
Jessica Blotter, CEO and Co-Founder, Kind Traveler
"At Kind Traveler, our mission is to harness the power of travel as a force for kindness, driving positive impact within communities and the environment.
Regardless of political leadership, the travel industry has a unique and profound opportunity to influence how people engage with the world sustainably and responsibly.
With a Trump presidency shaping the next four years, the travel industry could experience shifts in policies related to environmental protections, public lands, and global relations. Historically, these areas directly impact travel and tourism, from how national parks are managed to the level of international cooperation on climate initiatives.
However, it’s also important to note that travelers, communities, industry stakeholders, non-profits, and the private sector have become increasingly aware of their role in addressing the global climate crisis and fostering social equity.
We’ve observed that travelers are looking to align their travel choices with their values more than ever. Even amidst potential deregulation or policy shifts, the momentum behind sustainable tourism, regenerative travel, and community impact will likely continue to grow.
For instance, many destinations and companies are already setting ambitious carbon reduction goals, promoting local and indigenous communities, and emphasizing traveler education around sustainability. These initiatives are driven by the private sector, non-profits, and individual travelers, transcending political cycles.
Our role as an industry is to stay committed to these principles, ensuring that tourism remains a catalyst for positive change. By creating opportunities for every stay to give back—whether it’s protecting fragile ecosystems, supporting underserved communities, or driving economic growth through local businesses—we can maintain a course toward a more sustainable and equitable future for travel.
In that sense, the resilience of the travel industry and the power of conscious travelers will be key in navigating any challenges that arise in the next four years."
Leigh Barnes, President, Intrepid Travel
"This moment is an urgent call to deepen and define why we travel. As a new era of American leadership begins, Intrepid feels a renewed commitment to our core values of inclusion, environmental responsibility, and gender equality.
Some rhetoric and policies associated with the Trump administration diverge sharply from these principles, yet this moment reaffirms our mission to create positive change through the joy of travel. Because done right, we believe that travel can be a force for good."
On creating community over divisiveness:
"Trump has proudly asserted that he is a “nationalist” and will close borders. In a time of global division, Intrepid believes that travel is the bridge bringing people together, connecting us across backgrounds, borders, and beliefs. We embrace community and connection and see diversity as one of our greatest strengths and opportunities.
Travel inspires empathy to open our hearts and minds. By embracing the richness of diverse cultures rather than isolating them, we remind ourselves—and the world—how deeply interconnected we really are. This vision guides every journey we create, proving that respect and humanity transcend all boundaries.
In times like these, travel is about more than visiting new places; it’s about advancing shared values, protecting our planet, and fostering a more inclusive world. We are committed to using our platform to build connections, drive sustainable change, and uphold the values of equity, justice, and community."
On taking urgent climate action:
"The climate crisis is one of our era’s greatest challenges, and we recognize that meaningful action cannot wait. Over the years, the Trump administration dismantled major climate policies and rolled back over 100 environmental rules governing clean air, water, wildlife and toxic chemicals, but we know that our planet’s health demands unwavering commitment.
We believe the travel industry can lead in addressing climate change, and we’re here to push that change forward."
On championing and empowering women:
"At Intrepid, we understand that women’s rights are eroding across the globe and will continue to at a shocking rate in America. Travel is a way to vote with your pocketbook.
Through our Women’s Expeditions, for example, we provide transformative experiences that uplift not only travelers but the women who lead and support these journeys. In Nepal, for example, we collaborate with an all-female trekking team, creating pathways for women in a traditionally male-dominated industry.
These programs reflect our deep commitment to gender equality, and they’re gaining momentum: our Women’s Expeditions have shown the second-highest YOY growth across all Intrepid offerings.
By supporting women-led businesses, we ensure the financial benefits of tourism flow directly into the hands of the women leading these experiences.
Intrepid’s commitment to women’s empowerment across these touchpoints represents a profound shift in the travel industry, setting a new standard for socially responsible tourism."
Carolyn Ray, CEO, JourneyWoman
I’m in shock and disbelief, because I am so very worried about the protection of women’s rights – this goes beyond travel, it affects our families, friends and communities.
We know that when women feel safe and confident, they thrive. When women travel with confidence and independence, the world thrives. While we may feel powerless in this moment, it’s not a time for women to stand down.
We need to gather our resources and our allies, and keep speaking up. We must continue to use our voices to help those who feel vulnerable. In the end, I think this will be a catalyst for women to rise up and do what we can to make travel safer, more diverse and inclusive for everyone. I intend for JourneyWoman to be a part of that positive change.
Debbie Misajon, Founder, The Coconut Traveler
"The travel industry under Trump could mean many things and while as difficult to predict as his winning was, I believe several things could happen.
He is pro-business, pro-oil and gas, and unwilling to believe climate change is taking place. This might loosen environmental and climate regulations on large polluting travel companies like airlines and cruise lines.
Depending on your investments, this could be positive or negative. But this could also push forward the global shift we’re seeing in travel businesses that believe the science and who are independently developing ways to make travel more green.
I feel his presidency will motivate the travel industry to be better because the industry is acutely aware of the impact of travel. Specifically, I’m betting that B Corp-certified travel companies, whose numbers are growing and who use their business as a force for good in their local community and environment, will rise to the challenge his presidency could present.
Without federal support, it’ll come down to boots on the ground to support the trend of more consumers looking for sustainable travel options, a full 76% say that traveling more sustainably in general is important to them and 43% of travelers are willing to pay more on trips that support sustainable travel practices according to the World Economic Forum.
There’s momentum in reducing the negative impacts of travel and his presidency won’t derail the movement, in fact I think it’ll make it stronger.
In light of the outcome of the election, The Coconut Traveler has signed up for 1% for the Planet which is a commitment to donating at least 1% of annual sales to environmental organizations in addition to continuing our effort to obtain B Corp re-certification. One man can’t derail the momentum of many."
Alexandra Farrington, Luxury Travel Advisor, Acera Travel
"We can predict how a second Trump administration might shape travel by using 2017 as a roadmap.
In travel, perception matters. Diplomatic relations shape how travelers view a destination, and people are drawn to places that feel open and welcoming. One big issue travelers could face is growing hostility toward Americans if Trump continues to take an aggressive and nationalistic stance. For travel planners, that might mean pivoting to other destinations or encouraging travel within the U.S.
Trump's exclusionary policies are also tough on the travel economy. After travel restrictions were imposed in 2017, the U.S. saw a 4.2% drop in foreign visitors, costing the industry $2.7 billion in just one quarter.
Meanwhile, global tourism grew by a record-breaking 7%, while U.S. growth slowed to 1.7%—half the prior year’s rate.
This is a clear indicator that policy changes can push international travelers to look elsewhere. The global tourism market is fiercely competitive, and the U.S. can’t afford to lag. With international visitors spending over $213 billion in 2023—supporting 1.6 million U.S. jobs—the industry is very mindful of what’s at stake.
Of course, overall economic policy has a big impact on travel budgets. Tariffs, rising costs, or shifts in economic confidence could cause many to think twice about that next big trip.
When people feel financially stable, travel surges, but any policy that raises costs or shrinks disposable income can shake the entire industry. If economic policies create uncertainty, we could see spending soften and vacations cut short, with ripple effects across hotels, airlines, and the whole travel ecosystem.
Trump’s approach to deregulation could also significantly impact travel. Promoting and preserving America’s natural beauty would go a long way in staying competitive with travelers, but opening federal lands to drilling and loosening clean water standards as Trump did in his first term are a red flag. With more than 70% of travelers globally saying they prefer destinations that prioritize sustainability, policies like these might become deal-breakers for future travel.
The administration’s airline deregulations tell a similar story. Last-minute rule changes for airlines during Trump’s first term made it tougher for travelers to get recourse for things like hidden fees, delays, and refund issues. Though Biden helped with updated DOT guidelines, if consumer protections continue to loosen, we risk making travel less appealing for those who value safety, fairness, choice, and transparency."
LaDell Carter, Founder and Lead Travel Designer, Royal Expressions Travel
"We’re more inspired than ever to help our clients embrace the fresh sense of possibility and renewed desire to embrace life’s extraordinary moments. We’re extending an invitation to expand horizons, to say “yes” to more, and to let each journey be as liberating as it is luxurious. In times of change, there’s an innate desire to step out of the familiar and reward ourselves with the richness of new destinations, cultures, and adventures.
It’s about creating memories that transcend the everyday, sharing experiences that spark joy, and discovering the beauty and diversity that the world offers.
At Royal Expression Travels, we believe luxury travel is the ultimate expression of freedom and discovery—a celebration that resonates across all perspectives. Jennifer Spatz, Founder and CEO, Global Family Travels
"Overall,
the impact of the Trump presidency on travel will really depend on
specific policies that the administration implements, particularly
regarding immigration, visa regulations, and international relations.
Thinking
positively, Trump has talked about enhancing U.S. infrastructure,
which, if implemented, could positively impact domestic travel. With
better infrastructure, we could see an increase in domestic and
international travelers to explore the U.S.
However, during
the previous Trump term, there were travel bans and restrictions,
particularly targeting certain countries like Cuba. I think we will see
these come back into play. I also suspect many of the new
administration's policies will be less focused on climate change
mitigation, and therefore, the Trump administration may impact sectors
of the travel industry that rely upon environmental sustainability - such
as eco-tourism. We may see the funding cut to conservation initiatives,
tribal heritage tourism, and other favorable approaches the Biden-Harris
administration has fostered.
Lastly,
political tensions between the U.S. and other nations may influence
where Americans choose to travel. And this may impact inbound tourism
too, including fewer visitors from China and other regions coming to the United States.
Stricter immigration policies could also reduce the availability of workers
in the tourism sector. Although, pro-business policies might lead to
job growth if the administration encourages investments in
domestic tourism infrastructure."
