The Boeing Company is now trying hardball tactics with its striking workers. CEO Kelly Ortberg has stepped into the negotiations and delivered an ultimatum to the 33,000 machinists who have walked off the job—"Accept a contract proposal or the next one won’t be so favorable."
The union representing the striking workers has already rejected one contract proposal and is set to vote on another.
According to Jon Holden, president of the Machinists union District 731: “The next offer will be regressive.” The strike is now in its seventh week. The union’s Advisory Committee has urged workers to accept the latest offer of a 38 percent pay increase over four years. A vote is tentatively scheduled for Monday.
Boeing has certainly been financially impacted by the strike and is said to be losing almost a billion dollars per week. Airlines that have had to adjust their respective delivery schedules have sent mixed messages about the situation.
The ballot has been reduced to a simple yay or nay vote. A majority of just 50 percent plus one will pass the vote.
