Cancun Travel Guide

Cancun is an idyllic destination in Mexico featuring spectacular white beaches and a glistening ocean to swim in. Whether you’re there to party, relax on the beach, or learn about the history of the area, Cancun never disappoints.

If you are staying in Cancun for a while, you may want to rent a car so that you can drive from place to place easily.

If you would prefer to make use of local transport, we suggest you get friendly with the bus system. We found the Cancun bus system easy to understand and navigate, and the routes connect all the main areas in Cancun. It also allows you to avoid the unnecessarily high costs of taxis.

Important Things To Know

Currency

For everyday use, you can make use of Pesos, the national currency of Cancun. However, for bigger expenditures such as tour trips and nightclubs, you can use US Dollars.

National Languages

The national language of Cancun is Spanish.

However, the tourist areas are very flexible when it comes to language and you will hear many different languages spoken to accommodate tourists. These languages include English, French, German, and Italian.

We do recommend learning some Spanish sentences if you aren’t fluent in the language. This will help you avoid scams and enjoy the culture a lot more.

Climate And Weather

Cancun operates in a tropical climate. This means they make use of a wet and dry season whilst also maintaining the traditional four seasons. It also means that this incredible holiday destination maintains an average temperature of 86°F (30°C) throughout the year.

  • Dry Season: Starts in November and ends in April.
  • Spring: Spring runs from March to May, and sometimes may fall within the dry season. Humidity levels are usually quite low during this time.
  • Summer: Summer marks the start of the rainy season and normally falls within June. Although it isn’t very common to occur, hurricane season also starts in June.
  • Wet Season: The wet or rainy season overlaps with Summer and also starts in June, running until October. Due to the increase in humidity levels September and October are the months with the highest risks of hurricanes.
  • Autumn: Autumn marks the end of the rainy season and typically takes place in November. You can expect a gradual reduction in rainfall and the days will start becoming shorter.
  • Winter: Winter undoubtedly overlaps with the dry season and takes place in December. Typically, the days are shorter, the air is cooler and there is a notable change in humidity.

With an average temperature of 86°F (30°C), we would say Cancun is wonderful year-round. However, we find that the best season to visit is the dry season. This is between November and March.

The reason is that humidity levels are low and so are the chances of your activities getting rained out. In addition, there’s no risk of accidentally finding yourself trapped in Cancun during a hurricane.

Best Places To Stay In Cancun

  • The Hotel Zone (Zone Hotelier): This is where the heart of hustle and bustle is in Cancun and runs a 22 km length. It is split into three sectors to accommodate different travelers:
  • North Hotel Zone: This is perfect for the solo traveler, or if you are holidaying with some friends. Here you will find a pumping nightlife, and superb food and dining.
  • Middle Hotel Zone: Are you looking for a relaxing getaway with the family? Then we suggest you look at finding accommodation in the middle zone. The middle zone is host to superb beaches and activities that will have you coming back for more.
  • South Hotel Zone: For those looking for a romantic getaway or some peaceful downtime - the south is for you. We found that the south zone hosts the quietest beaches of all three zones.
  • El Centro: If you want to find yourself lost in the culture and beauty of Cancun, we recommend booking a stay in El Centro, also known as downtown Cancun. Here you’ll find yourself bargain shopping and feasting your days through.
