In response to Florida’s recent removal
of LGBTQ+ travel information from its tourism website, Connecticut is
taking an opposing stand by re-emphasizing its commitment to inclusivity. With LGBTQ+ History Month
approaching in October, Connecticut’s tourism office is underscoring the
state's ongoing tradition of embracing diversity, reminding residents and
tourists alike that the Constitution State is a welcoming place for all,
regardless of sexual orientation or identity.
“We want to send a
strong message to everyone, particularly to those in Florida—and across the
country—who may feel their needs and identities are being sidelined, to know
that in Connecticut you will always find acceptance,” said Anthony
Anthony, Chief Marketing Officer for the State of Connecticut. “Here,
diversity is celebrated, and we remain committed to ensuring everyone who
visits or lives here feels valued, respected, and free to be yourself.”
A National
Leader in Inclusivity
Connecticut has long
held a national reputation for its progressive stance on LGBTQ+ rights, leading
the country in many areas of diversity and inclusion. While other states are shrinking
away from supporting LGBTQ+ communities, Connecticut continues to be a national
leader in terms of its robust anti-discrimination laws and backing of LGBTQ+
community organizations. All of this fosters one of the nation’s most welcoming
environments for all people.
In fact,
Connecticut was recently ranked by Out Leadership as one of the top two states
in the U.S. for its LGBTQ+ business climate, including policies, protections
and equitable treatment of LGBTQ+ individuals. Several cities in the state have
also earned perfect scores on the Human Rights Campaign’s Municipal Equality
Index, reinforcing Connecticut’s leadership in fostering an environment that
supports the LGBTQ+ community. The state has also been commended for its
advancements in transgender healthcare access by the Transgender Law Center.
"These
accolades reflect the heart of who we are as a state," adds Anthony.
"They’re not just awards—they represent our daily commitment to fostering
a community where everyone can feel safe, accepted, and celebrated. We lead by
example, ensuring that our policies and practices not only protect but also
empower every individual who calls Connecticut home."
Extensive Resources
for the LGBTQ+ Community
Connecticut does
more than just talk the talk, offering tangible resources, services and sweeping
legal protections for its LGBTQ+ population. The state leads with action, from its
extensive anti-discrimination laws to gender-neutral birth certificates and a
blanket ban on conversion therapy. Connecticut also guarantees equal adoption
rights, endorsing second-parent adoption, while its educational system implements
inclusive school policies and includes LGBTQ+ curricula. What’s more, the state
supplies critical healthcare services specific to members of the LGBTQ+
community, including transgender healthcare coverage, and supports LGBTQ+ youth
through specialized organizations and community centers.
“Our message is
clear,” said Anthony. “In Connecticut, everyone is welcome. Unlike Florida
which has removed LGBTQ+ resources from its tourism website, we are proud to
prominently feature out commitment to inclusivity across all our platforms,
including CTvisit.com. Our marketing
efforts showcase Connecticut as a beacon of safety, acceptance, and opportunity
for all, ensuring our state remains a destination where everyone can truly
belong.”
