It's not for the faint of heart, but adventurous travelers sailing with luxury line Silversea Cruises from Venice, Italy, can take a hike in the Dolomite Mountains.

While billed as something for all skill levels, the "Hiking in Cortina" tour on the via ferrata, or "iron road," is equipped with steel cables, ladders and other fixed anchors, such as wooden walkways and suspended bridges. So it's possible that even those not skilled in mountain climbing techniques can climb vertical walls, hike on narrow ledges and reach mountain peaks.

The hike is part of a three-night pre- or post-cruise land extension in Cortina d'Ampezzo, a picturesque Italian town that once hosted the Winter Olympics, located at the foot of the Dolomites. The optional land program is available this summer to those taking Mediterranean cruises departing or concluding in Venice.

The "Hiking in Cortina" package includes up to eight hours with a certified alpine guide, use of safety equipment, three nights' accommodations, some meals, and transfers between airport, hotel and pier. Participants should bring proper clothing, boots, and a backpack. Tour prices start at $1,979 per person, double occupancy.

Accommodations are at the Rosapetra Spa Resort, where guests have complimentary access to the resort's heated swimming pool, whirlpool, sauna, and Mediterranean and Turkish baths.

Participants meet with an alpine guide to determine the itinerary best suited to their skill levels. The guide also provides proper safety equipment, including a helmet, harness, gloves, and other cable gear. Hikers set their own pace and may hike for as long as they want.

The program is available in conjunction with 17 voyages, including the Silver Wind's July 9-19 cruise from Rome to Venice and the Silver Spirit's Aug. 10-19 voyage from Venice to Istanbul.
