It's Not All-Inclusive, But That's OK

I find that agents and clients tend to favor all-inclusive options, but on some islands, it's more about the destination than the resort itself.

St. Kitts and Nevis are a prime example of this.

I have been traveling to this slice of paradise for over 20 years and have decided to have my 70th birthday celebration there. With every visit, I learn more and experience more. So, let's talk about how we sell these destinations to ourselves and our clients.

When I first extended the invitation to my party, I was concerned about my guests' reaction to the non-inclusive option. Once I explained it, to my surprise, I had over 30 guests attend. So, allow me to break it down for you.

The Marriott in St. Kitts is the perfect location with its newly remodeled rooms and ideal location in Frigate Bay. The hotel is four miles from the Robert L. Bradshaw International International Airport and Port Zante (the cruise port and downtown Basseterre). The hotel has its own casino, lounge, pools and spa facilities. The Sky Lounge has half-priced drinks and appetizers, and the hotel is located along a beautiful stretch of beach.

There are several restaurants at the Marriott, but there are numerous restaurants within walking distance of the property and a supermarket right across the street. The famous Strip, which has local restaurants and bars, is a 10-minute walk away, but there is also a taxi stand near the Marriott for those who prefer to avoid walking. The hotel offers an amazing breakfast buffet for $25.

ALCOHOL

Ram's supermarket is right across the street from the Marriott, but you can also purchase local drinks from the many restaurants and beach bars. For non-alcoholic drinkers, there are coffee shops and natural juice options within walking distance of the Marriott.

ACCOMMODATIONS

From luxury hotels to Airbnb, there are accommodations for any price point in St. Kitts. Some have kitchens and laundry facilities, so instead of paying per person, you pay one price for the room and split it.

HOW TO GET AROUND

There are many experienced taxi and tour operators on the island, and if you are comfortable driving left, you can rent a car and explore the island. You'd have to purchase a driver's license. Walking is also a very safe option. Nevis is nearly a 10-minute boat ride on the fast ferry from St. Kitts, and it is well worth the trip to experience the hot springs and culture. Don't forget that killer bee drink at Sunshine's. My group is again fortunate to travel during Culturama, Nevis’s carnival.

FOOD

there are many food options in St. Kitts, from inexpensive meals to fine dining. My group is traveling during restaurant week, so we are in for a real treat. The ingredient this year is papaya. May restaurants in St. Kitts and Nevis will be offering special pricing and menus. Italian, vegan and local food stands serve amazing and inexpensive foods from their roadside stands.

EXCURSIONS

St. Kitts offers ATV riding, zip-lining, swimming with dolphins, hiking, snorkeling, rum tours, and so much more. Your group will not have to travel with other large groups and can do these things at their own pace.

So here’s the breakdown from the Queen City Charlotte.

  • Airfare: $658 per person
  • Hotel for five nights: $700 for up to four persons in a room
  • Food: $200.00
  • Transportation: $60.00
  • Beverages: $50.00
  • Excursions: you control the cost

Take some time to educate yourselves and your seasoned travelers on not necessarily all-inclusive destinations. They will enjoy connecting with the locals as well.

You may find the price points are not that different and the experiences memorable!
