Update: November 27, 2024, at 8:30 a.m. ET

Forecasters are calling for the Thanksgiving holiday to be a wet one in the Northeast, as the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade in New York City and the 6abc Dunkin' Donuts Thanksgiving Day Parade in Philadelphia could face rainy weather with temperatures in the 40s.

According to ABCNews.com, winds could reach 10 to 15 mph.

Rain is expected throughout Thursday morning along much of the East Coast, with snow being predicted in northern Pennsylvania and upstate New York. Much of the Interstate 95 corridor will be soggy throughout the holiday.

Temperatures will reach the 70s in Arizona and the 80s in Florida, but lower temps are expected in the Midwest, reaching only the 30s and 40s. As for the weekend, travelers heading home should expect frigid air across the nation and heavy snow around the Great Lakes.

While weather prognosticators aren’t forecasting any major storms for the Thanksgiving holiday travel period, the United States will face rain, snow and wind that can cause headaches at the airport or on the road.

On Tuesday, heavy snow is possible in parts of Colorado, Utah and California, while lighter snow will be reported in the northern Great Lakes New England's high country and the northern Rockies. Rain is also impacting flights along the norther East Coast.

Wednesday is a major travel day for the holiday, and Americans should expect light rain and thunderstorms in the mid-Mississippi Valley, Ohio Valley and Mid-South region. Light snow could develop at night in the southern Great Lakes and interior Northeast.

As for Thanksgiving Day, snow is expected in higher elevations from West Virginia to Pennsylvania, upstate New York and northern New England, while rain is forecast for the Southeast.

Travelers heading home after the holiday need to be on high alert, as lake-effect snow on Friday and Saturday could be heavy in parts of the Great Lakes from Upper Michigan to western and upstate New York. Light snow in parts of the Central Plains and mid-Mississippi Valley could also lead to slippery travel.

On Sunday, travelers will be dealing with the aftermath of the lake-effect snow, but most of the country should be precipitation free with few airport weather delays at major hubs.

Original Text

AAA is estimating a record number of 80 million travelers during Thanksgiving week. Many of them could run into some weather-related issues.

Here’s the breakdown from The Weather Channel about what we could possibly expect in the United States for the rest of this week.

Spoiler Alert: Keep the toll-free numbers of your airlines and cruise lines handy and keep your fingers nimble. There could be precipitation in much of the country this week.

Northeast

Newark Airport in New Jersey had delays of up to an hour on Monday, but otherwise, it appears to be pretty good. The concern is for later in the week for New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington and the eastern corridor.

West

Rain and snow. Temperatures are cool and are conducive to both weather events. There have been both from Seattle to San Francisco, although it is not expected to reach the Southern California region near Los Angeles. But forecasters are saying there is a chance for 12 to 20 inches of snow in the Colorado area between Tuesday and Thursday morning.

Midwest

Surprisingly, just a dusting of snow through Monday for Chicago, Minneapolis and Columbus. Not a lot more is expected of the snow, but it is going to be enough to cover the ground and perhaps formulate a White Christmas.

Cities like Detroit, Toledo and Cincinnati are expected to emerge unscathed through the holiday weekend.

Ohio River Valley

Places like Pittsburgh and even Cleveland will be on alert.

Southeast

This is the dry season in Florida and other than cool temperatures in the 50s and 60s for a couple of days it has been utterly spectacular. There has been little to no humidity, even though temperatures are expected to rise back up into the 80s by the end of the week.

New England

Definitely one to watch. Parts of New York, Vermont, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and the rest of the New England states are being forecasted for snow at the end of the week.
