Sustainable travel in the Nordics embodies a commitment to environmental conservation, cultural preservation, and responsible tourism practices, making the region a frontrunner in eco-friendly and mindful exploration.

In the Nordics, sustainable travel is seamlessly integrated into the fabric of the destination experience. From eco-certified accommodations nestled in pristine landscapes to eco-friendly transportation options such as electric buses and bike-sharing programs in urban centers, the region prioritizes minimizing its ecological footprint.

Nature is at the heart of Nordic sustainable travel, and efforts are directed towards preserving and showcasing breathtaking landscapes. National parks and protected areas abound, allowing visitors to engage in low-impact activities like hiking and wildlife watching.

Cultural preservation is also paramount. Local communities actively participate in sustainable tourism initiatives, offering authentic experiences that highlight traditional practices, crafts, and cuisines.

In 2024, the Nordics is set to redefine sustainable travel. The region is introducing several new and enhanced experiences to propel this effort.

Denmark is introducing two new electric ferries by Molslinjen in 2024, connecting visitors sustainably to the eco-friendly island of Samsø.

Travelers to the Faroe Islands can embrace authentic local living at the restored cottage, Hanusarstova. The experience is a true taste of local life in the region.

Two new hotels in Helsinki will embody sustainable practices in 2024--the Solo Sokos Hotel Pier 4 in Katajanokka and the Helsinki Airport Hotel, a landmark boasting over 700 rooms, restaurants, a rooftop sky bar, spa, and gym facilities.

Greenland is offering a unique new slow-travel experience aboard Arctic Umiaq Line’s coastal ferry Sarfaq Ittuk in the New Year and, in Iceland, the country is promoting environmental consciousness and advocating for slow exploration during the off-season.

Norway is showcasing sustainable travel along the coast with hybrid and electric ships on Hurtigruten or Havila, and Sweden's suppliers are committed to sustainability through Nature's Best Sweden, emphasizing sustainability and positive impacts on local communities.

This campaign is part of the collaboration between the Nordics and Visit Europe and co-funded by the European Union.
