October was a relatively tame month for travel advisory updates after a busy few months for U.S. State Department travel guidance to close out the summer.

Nonetheless, officials issued some crucial advice for a handful of notable destinations around the globe, from North America to South Asia.

Here are the most notable travel advisory updates from October that you may have missed.

Sri Lanka - Level 2

Exercise increased caution in Sri Lanka due to civil unrest and terrorism, according to the State Department's most recent October 2 update.

"Protests over the economic and political situation in Sri Lanka can erupt at any time. In some instances, police have used water cannons and tear gas to disperse protesters," officials warn. "U.S. citizens are reminded to avoid all gatherings, even peaceful ones, that could turn violent with little or no warning."

Canada - Level 1

The State Department reissued its Level 1 travel advisory for Canada on October 4, encouraging Americans to exercise normal precautions north of the border this holiday season.

Egypt - Level 3

As of October 15, travelers are advised to reconsider travel to Egypt due to terrorism concerns. U.S. officials also recommend travelers exercise increased caution in the country due to the Embassy’s limited ability to assist dual national U.S.-Egyptian citizens who are arrested or detained.

Specific areas to avoid this fall include the Northern and Middle Sinai Peninsula and the Western Desert due to terrorism. Visitors should also avoid Egyptian border areas due to military zones.

Rwanda - Level 3

Another African country receiving a Level 3 travel advisory heading into November, Rwanda is dealing with an outbreak of Marburg Virus Disease. U.S. officials are asking Americans to reconsider travel as a result.

Armed violence is also a concern along Rwanda's borders with Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Visitors are asked to exercise increased caution along the former and reconsider travel to the latter region.

Turkey - Level 2

The State Department updated its Level 2 travel advisory for Turkey on October 16, advising travelers to exercise increased caution due to terrorism and arbitrary detentions. Visitors should avoid Sirnak province, Hakkari province and any area within six miles of the Syrian border due to terrorism.

Tunisia - Level 2

Travelers should exercise increased caution in Tunisia due to terrorism this autumn.

There are also several specific areas to avoid due to terrorism and military zones, including within 10 miles (16 kilometers) of the Algerian border with the exception of Tabarka and Ain Draham; within 10 miles of the border with Libya; The Mount Chaambi National Park, Mount Salloum, Mount Sammamma, and Mount Mghila in Kasserine governorate; The Mount Orbata area in the Gafsa governorate and the desert south of Remada.

Greenland - Level 2

The State Department updated its Level 2 travel advisory for Greenland on October 29, encouraging visitors to exercise increased caution due to environmental hazards posed by extreme weather conditions and limited emergency services.

Travelers are advised to "obtain comprehensive travel, medical, and evacuation insurance" and "travel with a professional guide or organization, such as those that are a member of the Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators."
