St. Lucia Travel Guide

The small island nation of St Lucia has been a hidden gem for decades. But recently, its breathtaking natural landscape, music scene, and delicious foods have entered the mainstream and drawn more and more people to its shore.

We’re no different and we’re here to tell you a visit is worth every minute!

To help you make the most of your time in St Lucia, follow this St Lucia travel guide and learn about the best times to visit, where to stay, and what to expect.

Getting Around St Lucia

  • Car: There are many car rental agencies and all you need is a valid license or an international driver's license. We find that renting a car provides the most freedom while in St Lucia.
  • Taxi: Taxis are clustered around tourist spots and the airport, and provide quick and easy travel options. But before you choose a taxi, confirm the rates with the driver to ensure you get the best deal.
  • Minibus: Minibusses are the locals’ method of transport and the most affordable option. The trips run a fixed track around the island and the towns, which can be a little difficult if you’re trying to go somewhere specific. But combined with taxis and walking, it’s the most affordable way to get around.

Top Things To Do

Jade Mountain, St. Lucia
St Lucia, a small Caribbean Sea island, is home to boundless adventure. It houses plenty of adventure and fun experiences - from volcanic mountains to bustling nightlife scenes and everything in between. Below, we have collected our picks for the best things to do in St Lucia to help you plan your trip.

Important Things To Know

Currency

St Lucia uses the Eastern Caribbean Dollar, which is recognized by the $ and EC$ symbols. The Eastern Caribbean Dollar is divided into the following denominations: $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100 notes; 5c, 10c, 25c, $1, and $2 coins.

Luckily, we found that the USD is also accepted almost everywhere on the island.

National Languages

The official language of St Lucia is English, so traveling between tourist destinations and communicating with the locals was fairly easy.

But a large number of locals also speak French Creole, which is just as diverse in sound as the people are in heritage. If you travel away from tourist spots into more rural areas, you’ll hear this dialect more often.

Climate And Weather

St Lucia, like other Caribbean Sea islands, has a tropical climate that is warm throughout the year. There is no real difference between the winter and summer months so it’s easier to distinguish between wet and dry seasons.

Late December to May is the dry part of the year and also the most temperate.

June to December is the rainy season in St Lucia. During this time, the coast receives a little less rain than the forested regions. It’s also around this time that hurricanes make landfall in the region.

St Lucia is busiest from December to April when the weather is the driest. While it is crowded, this time is perfect for all the adrenaline-fueled activities on the island, like hiking and ziplining.

If you’re not too bothered by later afternoon showers, we’d recommend June to December. The weather is warm, accommodation is affordable, and local art, music, and history festivities are in full swing.

  • On the opposite end of the spectrum is Gros Islet. This is the best place to go if you’re looking for bustling nightlife.
  • For shopping, visit Castries. While here, we had the pleasure of exploring dozens of independent stores and local markets.
  • Soufriere is one of the oldest towns in St Lucia. It’s the perfect place to stay if you’re interested in history and architecture.
